Endothermy and Ectothermy in Mice at ~3°c

چکیده

A study is being made of the effects on laboratory mice (Mus musculus L.) of breeding at an environmental temperature of — 2 to — 4 C. It has been found that both A (white) and C57 (black) mice, rigorously inbred, can be maintained indefinitely at this temperature, given cotton-wool for nesting (Barnett & Manly, 54)In general, adjustment to a low temperature may be of two kinds: (a) internal changes (endothermic), such as raised heat production or improved thermal insulation; (b) alteration of the environment of the animal (ectothennic), for instance nest-building or moving to a warmer place. This paper describes some observations on the combination of endothermic and ectothermic adjustments by which mice maintain themselves at — 3 C.

Ectothermy and endothermy: evolutionary perspectives of thermoprotection by HSPs.

Living organisms respond to heat exposure by selectively expressing heat shock proteins (HSPs). Accumulation of HSPs confers thermotolerance in cell cultures and in ectotherms and is an important component of the heat shock response. This response, however, has not been directly examined in relation to different ;thermal states', namely ectothermy vs endothermy. By using avian development as a ...

Comparison of Mitochondrial Reactive Oxygen Species Production of Ectothermic and Endothermic Fish Muscle

Recently we demonstrated that the capacity of isolated muscle mitochondria to produce reactive oxygen species, measured as H2O2 efflux, is temperature-sensitive in isolated muscle mitochondria of ectothermic fish and the rat, a representative endothermic mammal. However, at physiological temperatures (15° and 37°C for the fish and rat, respectively), the fraction of total mitochondrial electron...

Comment on "Evidence for mesothermy in dinosaurs".

Grady et al. (Reports, 13 June 2014, p. 1268) studied dinosaur metabolism by comparison of maximum somatic growth rate allometry with groups of known metabolism. They concluded that dinosaurs exhibited mesothermy, a metabolic rate intermediate between endothermy and ectothermy. Multiple statistical and methodological issues call into question the evidence for dinosaur mesothermy.

The evolution of endothermy and its diversity in mammals and birds.

Many elements of mammalian and avian thermoregulatory mechanisms are present in reptiles, and the changes involved in the transition to endothermy are more quantitative than qualitative. Drawing on our experience with reptiles and echidnas, we comment on that transition and on current theories about how it occurred. The theories divide into two categories, depending on whether selection pressur...

Biomechanics of Running Indicates Endothermy in Bipedal Dinosaurs

BACKGROUND One of the great unresolved controversies in paleobiology is whether extinct dinosaurs were endothermic, ectothermic, or some combination thereof, and when endothermy first evolved in the lineage leading to birds. Although it is well established that high, sustained growth rates and, presumably, high activity levels are ancestral for dinosaurs and pterosaurs (clade Ornithodira), othe...
